Beta carotene is a nutrient naturally found in foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, mangoes and apricots. If a certain food has a bright yellow to red hue, it can be safely assumed that it is rich in such nutrient. A common application seen today is that of beta carotene powder used as a food coloring agent.
It is a good source of antioxidants wherein it is effective in reducing the amount of free radicals in the body as well as shielding the body from the devastating consequences brought about by the oxidation process. It is also to be noted that it can be converted into vitamin A leading to a stronger immune system. When consumed with a small amount of fat, the body absorbs the vitamin thus invigorating specific body parts such as the eyes and the reproductive system.
Although beta carotene powder is essential in keeping the body fit and healthy, there are situations wherein its consumption is limited or at times, it is not recommended at all. As advised by physicians, an instance wherein ingestion of the beta carotene powder is not allowed is when an individual would undergo laser hair removal. It is suggested that large quantities of beta carotene be avoided prior the said procedure. Otherwise, patients may find themselves making multiple trips to the clinic just to achieve the desired hair-free results.
In the process of laser hair removal, a device is used to remove the hair follicles with the aid of specific creams topically applied on the skin. Such application makes the process easier and it also shields the skin from any laser damage. It is to be noted that the laser is then passed through a series of temperature-lowering filters even before it comes into contact with the skin. It should be kept in mind that individuals who regularly consume either beta carotene-rich foods or beta carotene powder normally have darker skin tone which is approximately close to a tan. In some cases, ingestion of such substance can even make the skin sensitive to light. These situations essentially make the laser hair removal process a whole lot difficult.
While undergoing the procedure, the energy from the laser aims for the hair follicle on the skin. Individuals with dark skin caused by ingestion of high amount of beta carotene or prolonged exposure to sunlight need to know that the energy from the laser is partially absorbed, therefore, it does not perform as expected. This makes the procedure less efficient as it greatly reduces the amount of energy coming into contact with the skin. Although there may be some follicles that would still be removed through the procedure, the treatment will be more uncomfortable for patients since the process will be done multiple times. Additional complications include some swelling or discoloration of the skin.
Individuals interested in undergoing the procedure are advised to avoid foods that have high levels of beta carotene or using beta carotene powder. This period of fasting may last from several weeks to a few months before the procedure. In addition, those who recently enjoyed the beach and got a tan are also advised against undergoing the said procedure since the effects will be similar to those who consume high amounts of beta carotene. Consumers are advised to consult proper medical specialists in order to be guided which foods should be avoided and get possible modifications to one’s diet.
